DECENDANTS OF JOHN FREDRICK HERNDON b1796 & LOU PATSY CHARLES b1817

Lou PatsyLou Patsy Charles

There was two main Herndon families in Caddo Parish, John Frederick Herndon & Lou Patsy Charles settled first in the late 1830's and William Herndon and wife Mary Woolfork settled by 1870. William was John Frederick's 3rd cousin, he brought with him 2 black Herndon women Martha b-1845 in Kentucky & Ellen b-1858 in Texas, both have children with un documented fathers, not sure but these 2 women I think were x-slaves of his and the kids could possibly be his. William is the father of Edward Beverly Herndon of the law firm Wise & Herndon in Shreveport. Lou Patsy was emancipated in 1840 by John Frederick and all her offspring were free, they are found living as a family in the 1850 & 1860 census as "Free Persons of Color" - Herndon History

William E. Herndon was born in Virginia to the original line from William Herndon & Catherine Digges, same line as William Henry Herndon the law partner for Abraham Lincoln.  All these children were born in Kentucky except Claude, he was born in Texas. They moved to Caddo Parrish in the 1860’s, and lived close to John Frederick.

footnotes: Sarah Jane Herndon: She's mentioned as one of the 5 children being Emancipated in 1845, I believe she died before 1850 as she's not in the census, not sure but looks from the record that Margaret and Eliza most likely were adopted x-slaves, they are both named in the 1850 census as "Free Persons of Color". The 1845 record only names Mary Ann, Sarah Jane, Joseph, James, and John. David Herndon is mentioned by Joe Herndon in court testimony where he's asked about older siblings, he says "David Herndon and Mary Herndon" and also mentions Sarah who he says died. No mention of Eliza or Margaret so this pretty much confirms to me that they were adopted.

Children mentioned in 1880 Will of JF Herndon: Mary Ann, Joseph, James, Fannie, Katie, Edward, Martha, Jacob, Isabella (named as not his daughter and a half sibling so she would be Lou Patsy's daughter). Jacob is named as deceased.

Jas Herndon: Jas only shows up in the 1860 census and it's the same census that Joe Herndon doesn't show up in, so I think Jas was actually Joe just documented wrong, just a theory. The brother James B Herndon went by Jas B, this is what's on his marriage certificate so I think there was only 1 Jas Herndon.

Isaac Herndon: He's only in the 1860 census and Isabella is only in the 1870 & 1880, I have a hunch Isaac was named as a boy in 1870 and was actually Isabella. Just a hunch.
